The 2018 Colors of the Year have been announced. Leading industry brands select the color they believe will be the color that everyone wants to use in their home, for weddings, in clothing, for use online, in design, etc. We’ve highlighted a few of those industry-leading brand selections here:

For Pantone, color trend forecasting is about looking at what’s happening in our world now, what they see is going to happen in the future and being able to gather those key trends or “lead trend indicators” to see what the future looks like and what that means for color.  They look at not only the fashion industry but fashion on the streets of New York, Paris, and Milan, and the auto and technology industries as well to see what colors are popping up and why.

The colors of 2018 have been released, and there is quite a bit of variation. We often think of Pantone as the color expert, but Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have taken bold steps with their color of the year forecast.

Let’s take a look.

Pantone chose Ultra Violet as the color of the year.

Regarding this choice, Pantone said, “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”

As a royal purple, this description is spot on. Here at the agency, we think this is a great color to design with, and we’re excited about the choice!

In the words of Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.

We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative imagination that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

I love how Pantone’s color of the year is a true reflection of what’s needed in our world. There is so much more meaning to color than our personal likes and dislikes. But make no mistake our personal likes and dislikes hold their own special meaning, too.  That’s what’s so much fun about color.

Sherwin-Williams picked Oceanside SW 6496 as the 2018 color of the year. Personally, I LOVE this choice. The blue-greens have always moved me, and this one is no different. You’ll also find that this color is being doted as the color of wanderlust. I think I’m sold.

In the description of this color, Sherwin-Williams said it is “a collision of rich blue with jewel-toned green, a color that is both accessible and elusive. A complex, deep color that offers a sense of the familiar with a hint of the unknown, Oceanside bridges together a harmonious balance of blues and greens that can be found in what’s old and new.”

This color, and tones like it, have been popular for the past few years and I think it will continue to be widely used.

You’ll see a bit of this when our re-brand of the agency is revealed. The agency as a whole loves this color!
